Staff members of the African National Congress (ANC) claim they have not received their pay for two to three months. These picketing workers have threatened to shut down the ruling party’s offices and operations for the week.

The ANC workers say the party has failed to pay a number of salaries, even though they previously committed to do so. On Monday, 19 September, a number of ANC staff members participated in a national shutdown across the country.

A number of these staff members picketed outside Luthuli House headquarters. Many were seen holding placards. SABC News reports that there were protests earlier this year and even last year over the same salary issue.

Some members are planning to disrupt the upcoming conference

A representative for the ANC staff members Mvusi Mdlala says that by the 25th of September, some staff members will be three months without pay while others will be facing the second month without their salaries.

“We had a very successful shutdown yesterday and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday coming and Monday we will again withdraw our labour because most of them are preparing for the upcoming conference taking place over the weekend,” said Mdlala.

Mdlala noted plans to disrupt the conference planned for this weekend. He hopes that if this is successful, leadership will ‘come to the table and talk’.

Ruling party to pay staff for June and July ‘soon’

In July, it was reported that after staff threatened to disrupt a policy conference this week, the African National Congress (ANC) revealed that it would pay the members their outstanding salaries soon.

The unpaid workers were picketing outside provincial offices for the ruling party across South Africa on Tuesday, 26 July. The ANC’s policy conference is set to start on Thursday, 28 July, and the party now has to ensure funds are available to pay the workers.

ANC NEC member Gwen Ramokgopa reportedly made her way to Luthuli House on 26 July in an attempt to quell tensions building outside the ruling party’s headquarters. Ramokgopa spoke with workers who accused the ANC of unfair labour practices. Read the full story here.
