The ANC’s gone on the offensive after an anonymous recording was sent to several key parties, claiming that people wearing ANC T-shirts were seen setting some of the fires that have been tearing through the province.
The ruling party labelled the comments as “irresponsible” and said they were no doubt the work of “right-wing agents.”
“This is a very worrying trend in the Western Cape and our region, especially Langebaan‚” the ANC’s Sammy Claassen said.
Earlier this week the City of Cape Town announced that it would be looking into the increasingly suspicious circumstances surrounding the spate of fires that seem to only affect the Western Cape; and some folks have been whispering that it might be the work of certain elements within the ANC which has, in the past, threatened to “make the Western Cape ungovernable.”
“We just got confirmation that all these fires, which are all on farms, were set. We got confirmation from the guys who are busy fighting the fires from the helicopters that they are seeing the guys set the farms on fire‚” an Afrikaans-speaking man says in the voice clip.
“We all know that there is usually some bigger or darker reason behind these actions.”
“These fires are set on purpose. That doesn’t mean that because you don’t have a farm that is next to the area that is currently burning that you can relax. These guys are on the move and they are setting the fires on purpose‚” he continues.
Claassen, however, claims the ANC has information suggesting the recording might have been made by someonoe working with the fire services, and has asked the police to investigate.
“I’ve also heard the media clip going around but I can’t confirm its validity,” the City of Cape Town’s JP Smith said.
