The African National Congress (ANC) has sent well wishes to the president of the Women’s League Bathabile Dlamini, after learning that she has been diagnosed with COVID-19 and is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

“We wish Comrade Bathabile a speedy recovery and hope that she successfully completes her medical treatment so that she can return to office and continue serving the movement. Comrade Bathabile’s courage and resolve to beat COVID-19 should inspire all of us to stand together against this pandemic. We also wish many other South Africans who are battling with COVID-19 well. We must continue to defend each other and protect one another”

ANC urges compliance with COVID-19 protocols

The ANC has further urged South Africans to show compassion and solidarity with those who are infected and to offer support to all families who have lost their loved ones due to COVID-19.

“We must all continue to practice basic health protocols and adhere to regulations. We must continue to wear our face masks, practice good hygiene, observe social distancing and vaccinate as it is the right thing to do. Vaccination will also allow our country to achieve the much needed herd immunity necessary to ease lockdowns. It is only when we all work together that we can reduce the rate of transmissions and ultimately defeat this deadly coronavirus pandemic,” said ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe.

News of Bathabile Dlamini’s hospitalisation comes on the same day that the organisation Black Sash announced that she would be facing prosecution for perjury in relation to the 2016 social grants crisis.

Dlamini is accused of lying under oath during an inquiry into the social grants saga that was instituted by the Constitutional Court in 2017.

The company Cash Paymaster Services’ (CPS) contract with the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) to distribute the grants had expired and was renewed on several occasions. Dlamini was accused of not properly presiding over the matter and failing to ensure that Sassa was better equipped to take over the issuing of payments to grant recipients.
