ANC NEC meeting: Party provincial issues set to top the agenda

The ANC NEC is meeting over the weekend in Cape Town. Internal issues are back on the agenda, this time it’s all about a couple of smaller “transitions.”

The ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) is meeting in Cape Town this weekend for a meeting that is not urgent and not set to be particularly stressful. With this “new era” of calmness regarding ANC politics, we thought we would take a look at what’s likely to be at the top of the party’s agenda.

Provincial problems: A broad issue?

Eastern Cape

President Cyril Ramaphosa and the rest of his 80 plus executive committee will be putting their heads together to find a solution to the questions around the province’s executive committee.

Last year, violent chaos broke out at the province’s elective conference with claims of fake delegates gaining entrance. Oscar Mabuyane was elected as chairman to replace Phumulo Masualle.

Masualle’s supporters walked out of the venue without voting after one of the brawls kicked off.

Once the conference ended, Masualle’s supporters called for a disbandment. Those calls only grew stronger after Mabuyane’s new leadership moved towards a reshuffle that would see Masualle removed as Premier of the Eastern Cape.

The ANC has since sent out a team to investigate the legitimacy of the conference.

KwaZulu-Natal

A similar disagreement in KZN saw a group that backed Ramaphosa loyalist Senzo Mchunu contest the legitimacy of the conference in the province. Sihle Zikalala was elected as chairman. The NEC had given the province until March to hold a new elective congress.  So far, there has been no action and Mchunu has been deployed to a position at Luthuli House.

Free State

The Free State conference had re-elected current ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule as their provincial chairperson in November. Magashule also faced allegations of “fake delegates” and has been heavily linked to the Guptas over the years regarding the Vrede Dairy Farm in his province. Magashule was also the premier of the province at the time.

Another issue for the national committee to discuss will be the sudden withdrawal of the parliamentary motion to nationalise the Reserve Bank.
