WATCH: ANC Councillor ‘names killers’ moments before he is murdered

The video of an ANC councillor, Sbonelo Mthembu, who was gunned down in Piet Retief, where he names the two people who should be questioned for his murder, has gone viral on social media. 

The councillor was brutally killed alongside two people on Friday night, 13 January 2023, in Mkhondo.

In a video believed to be taken before Sbonelo Mthembu was killed, he names Vusi Motha, also known as Sgemegeme, and the Executive Mayor (referred to as Simelane) for working together to assassinate people fighting corruption at Mkhondo Local Municipality. 

Mthembu further says that should he die, Sgemegeme would have killed him as he has made their lives a living hell for the past five years in Mkhondo. 

MPUMALANGA SAPS COMMISSIONER CONDEMNS BRUTAL MURDER

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, the three were shot at a yard in Mkhondo. Further information indicates that the Councillor and his mechanic were dropped off by a friend who was driving a bakkie when suddenly, three armed men appeared in the yard. 

The suspects reportedly fired multiple shots at the Councillor in the yard and fatally shot the friend who was still inside his bakkie. The mechanic did not escape the shooting as he was shot by the same suspects while in the yard. After that, the three suspects fled in an unknown direction.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli said paramedics were informed about the incident while the Councillor and his mechanic were privately taken to a nearby hospital. 

“The mechanic was unfortunately certified dead on arrival meanwhile, the Councillor succumbed to his injuries moments later,” he said.
