Five lives were lost in yet another head-on collision involving a VW Polo and a bus on the N2 towards Makhanda (Grahamstown)

Five lives were lost in yet another head-on collision on one of the straightest stretches on the N2 in the Eastern Cape.

FIVE LIVES DEMISE IN ONE COLLISION

According to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, the crash occurred on Friday, 6 January 2023 on the N2 just outside Peddie towards Makhanda.

“A VW Polo with five occupants (adults gender still unknown) from Makhanda direction collided with an Iveco Minibus from KwaBhaca with 23 occupants.”

All 5 occupants of the VW Polo died on the scene.

POLICE TO PROBE THE TRAGIC VW POLO ACCIDENT

A case of culpable homicide was opened at Peddie Police Station for further investigations.

This tragic accident involving a Polo comes one week after another that claimed three lives on the N2 between Mthatha and Qumbu on 30 December 2022.

The driver of the VW Polo became the third person to succumb to his injuries at Malizo Mpehle Hospital on 31 December 2022, taking the death toll to 3.

In other news, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport has laid to rest one of its traffic officers, Provincial Inspector Nokuthula Cembi.

Officer Cembi who was stationed at Phakade Traffic Station in Mt Ayliff passed on, on 26 December 2022.

Officer Cembi had been in the traffic law enforcement service for the past 13 years, having joined the traffic fraternity in November 2009.

She was one of the shining lights in the male-dominated traffic law enforcement, executing her duties with firmness and finesse that mainly a woman can master.

Transport MEC, Xolile Nqatha extended his sincere word of condolence to the family of the departed officer.

“We lost Officer Cembi at a critical time when most of our focus is on saving lives during this busy Festive Season. We wish to salute her and express our deepest gratitude for the 13 years of dedication and loyalty to her ought. She had been one of our trusted ground forces in traffic law enforcement. May her family find comfort in the knowledge that she was an asset not only to them but also to the province, their loss is also our loss,” said MEC Nqatha.

Her memorial service was held on 4 January while her burial was today, Saturday, 7 January 2023 at Dumsi Location, Mt. Ayliff.
