Two joggers killed in a hit and run accident in KwaZulu-Natal

An eyewitness said a speeding blue Honda ran over the two joggers on Saturday morning in Trurolands before the driver sped off without stopping.

Two joggers were killed in a hit-and-run accident while on their morning run on Edmund Morewood Road in Trurolands, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday morning. 

THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED EARLY ON SATURDAY MORNING

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Prem Balram said an eyewitness contacted them for assistance around 06:56 on Saturday.

“A bystander requested assistance for the two critically injured men. On arrival, paramedics assessed the joggers and found that they had been fatally injured.”

Balram said, according to the eyewitness, a blue Honda (model unknown) was travelling at a high rate of speed when the vehicle suddenly veered onto the pavement and ran over the two men. 

“The vehicle sped off without stopping. Reaction Officers conducted an extensive search for the vehicle however no arrests were made.” 

Balram said the identity of the two men had been established.

Meanwhile, in another horrific accident, a cyclist was killed in Johannesburg last weekend. 

The 50-year-old Alex Otto was killed on Sunday after he was struck down by a taxi, crushed, and dragged for over half a kilometre before members of the public stopped the taxi.

HYDRAULIC TOOLS WAS USED TO FREE THE SEVERELY DISFIGURED MAN

According to Netcare911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst, the scene was so horrific that even emergency workers were shocked by the incident.

“At 07H01 Sunday morning, Netcare 911 responded to a collision on Bowling Avenue near Kelvin Drive in Gallo Manor, Johannesburg.”

He said reports indicate that two cyclists were struck down by a speeding mini-bus taxi.

“One of the cyclists, an adult male approximately 50-years-old, was crushed by the taxi then dragged for over half a kilometre before the taxi was stopped by members of the public.

“Medics assessed the scene and found that the cyclist was still trapped underneath the taxi and required the Fire and Rescue services to use hydraulic tools to free the severely disfigured man.”

The driver, who is suspected of having been under the influence of alcohol, was arrested and booked into the Sandton police cells. He is facing criminal charges.
