Liverpool superstar Sadio Mane donated £500 000 (R 9 932 110) to help build a hospital in his hometown Bambali, Senegal, which has never had a hospital before. It is not the first time the 29-year-old footballer has given back to the community he grew up in. He previously donated £250 000 towards building a school in the same town.

Mane’s donation will go towards building a new hospital that will include, among other departments, a maternity care ward, dental facilities and consulting rooms.

Mane met with Senegalese president Macky Sall on 11 June to discuss the hospital project.

“Sadio Mane has presented the Head of State with an ambitious plan to build a hospital in Bambali and is counting on state support for medical personnel,” said the Presidency in a statement via Twitter.

Mane reportedly left Bambali at the age of 15 to pursue his dream of playing professional football in the Senegalese capital, Dakar. He joined a third division team, Generation Foot, and helped them to promotion in the 2010-2011 season.

Generation Foot had an agreement with French side Metz, whom Mane joined in 2011. Mane was signed by English Premier League side Southampton for £11.8 million in 2014 and adjusted to the league really well. The highlight of his first season was a hat trick (three goals) he scored in just 2 minutes and 56 seconds against Aston Villa in Southampton’s final home game of the year.

Mane joined Liverpool on 28 June 2016, for a fee of £34 million. Since then he’s been an invaluable member of the Merseyside team and played a pivotal role in their recent Premier League and UEFA Champions League successes.

The superstar has made 75 appearances for the Senegal national team, scoring 23 goals.
