Former Public Protector Advocate Thuli Madonsela fell victim to a WhatsApp and lost thousands of rands.

Madonsela took to Twitter to share with her followers how her friend’s WhatsApp was hacked and the alleged hacker asked for money for months on end.

THULI MADONSELA SCAMMED ON WHATSAPP

The person whose WhatsApp was hacked was a woman known to Madonsela as she (Madonsela) and her friends often assisted her financially.

“I and a friend lost thousands of rands from a scammer who had hijacked the WhatsApp profile of a mutual friend. He was pretending to be that friend. It was only when the scammer became so greedy and brazen that my son and I figured out the scam and warned other friends. WhatsApp ID theft or hacking is real,” she wrote.

Madonsela told Cape Argus that every time she called to speak to her friend, there seemed to be a problem with the line or her phone, and she would text saying she (the friend) could hear her, but because her phone was broken Madonsela probably couldn’t hear her.

“Also, the terms of endearment she used, such as the word ‘darling,’ were not words my friend would ordinarily use for me, but I was so busy most of the time I didn’t pay much attention. It was only later,” she told the publication.
