Disgraced celebrity doctor Nandipha Magudumana is represented by top lawyer Advocate Anton Katz SC. Who is the man trying to get the doctor’s arrest in Tanzania unlawful?
WHO IS ADVOCATE ANTON KATZ?
- Katz graduated with a BSc in Mathematics and an LLB at UCT, and an LLM International/ Constitutional Law at Columbia School of Law in New York.
- He is based in Cape Town and specialises in International Law.
- He was a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Working Group on Mercenaries from 2011 to 2018 and has appeared in the Constitutional Court on more than 60occasions and has appeared as counsel in numerous national jurisdictions as well as international fora and tribunals around the world.
- Katz reportedly serves on many committees and boards around the world, including being the Chairman of the Cape SAJBD’s Election Commission.
- According to News24,iIn November 2020, Advocate Katz left the Cape Bar after almost 30 years, saying in his resignation letter, the majority of the members of the council do not appear to “demonstrate attitudes and values [he associates] with collegiality, general fairness and quite simply, a sense of constitutionalism”.
WERE DR NANDIPHA’SRIGHTS INFRINGED?
A number of legal analysts have weighed in on Magudumana’s application and some agree that some of her rights were infringed during her arrest and deportation.
In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, legal analyst Mpumelelo Zikalala said Magudumana stands no chance of winning in her bid.
Zikalala said there are alternative remedies, and there is an appropriate manner in which this particular matter can be solved.
“It does not have to be solved on an urgent basis, but you can’t ignore that there are rights that are at stake; there are rights that seem to have been infringed at this particular stage. However, there is a reason for them being infringed, and there’s probably a valid explanation as to why those rights were infringed,” Zikalala explained.
