Former Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba launched Action SA – a new political party he hopes will challenge the ruling ANC for power – on Saturday.

Mashaba resigned from the Democratic Alliance (DA) in October 2019 and, in May this year, announced that he would be launching a party in August.

The party promises to represent South Africans determined to see off a “broken political system”, as well as ” build a prosperous, non-racial and secure future for all its people”.

Speaking at the Action SA launch, Mashaba said the country’s citizens are still suffering, despite 26 years of democracy.

“We suffer from the highest levels of inequality,” he said.

“We suffer from an economy that does not grow, leaving 10 million people unemployed and families destroyed by the stress of hunger.

“We suffer from levels of crime that leave law-abiding citizens living in fear while criminals roam our streets with impunity.”

Mashaba added that South Africans have been silent for too long, giving power to those “who claim to sepak for us”.

“But not anymore,” he said. “Our voices are rising and rising.

“We are ready to take action and take back the future of our country.”
