A seven-year-old girl killed in hit and run accident on R102, KZN

A seven-year-old girl was killed in a hit and run accident on the R102 on Thursday afternoon while her five-year-old cousin watched in horror.
THE DRIVER FLED WITHOUT STOPPING
According to Reaction Unit SA (RUSA) spokesperson Prem Balram, the accident happened on the northbound lane of the R102 in the vicinity of Cornubia, KwaZulu-Natal, on Thursday afternoon.

“We received multiple calls from passing motorists reporting the accident. On arrival at approximately 14:51, paramedics assessed the little girl and found that she had been fatally injured,” he said.
THE LITTLE GIRL WAS DECLARED DEAD ON THE SCENE
Balram said the driver of a white Ford Bantam bakkie who stopped to assist informed RUSA Members that a light motor vehicle traveling in front of him ran over the child.
“The driver failed to render assistance and fled the scene. The deceased’s five-year-old cousin, who was with her at the time of the incident, was not injured,” he said.
THE CHILDREN WERE TRYING TO CROSS THE ROAD TO GET ROPE
Barlam said it was established that both children were playing at a block of flats when they noticed an orange rope lying on the northbound lane.
“It is believed the children crossed the busy road in an attempt to retrieve the rope when the accident occurred.”

The seven-year-old girl was a resident of Pietermaritzburg, KZN.
THE LITTLE GIRL WAS VISITING FAMILY
Balram said that little girl arrived at her aunt’s house in Cornubia on Wednesday and was expected to spend the school holidays with relatives.
WHAT TO DO AFTER AN ACCIDENT:
- Stop your car and stay at the scene
- Firstly, stop your vehicle and, in the interest of road safety, switch on your hazards to warn other drivers. Climb out of your car if it is safe to do so and check if anyone has been hurt. If you can, take pictures of the damage to all the vehicles involved in the incident.
- Help anyone who has been hurt
- While you can only be criminally charged for causing the accident and any resulting injuries, as a bystander, you have a moral obligation to help someone who has been hurt in a road accident. Help includes contacting an ambulance or rescue unit, even if the injuries do not appear to be serious. It’s critical that you don’t move the injured party and that you do not administer first aid unless you are qualified to do so.
- Get the details
- Record the information of everyone involved in the road accident, including personal details, vehicle registration numbers, tow-truck information, and insurance details. Take note of all road names, landmarks, intersections, and robots, as you will have to draw a sketch and description of the accident on your police report and for insurance purposes.
- Report the accident
- Inform the police within 24 hours of the road accident. If the police come to the scene, don’t move anything until they say you may. Ensure that you get an Accident Report (AR) number, as this is needed for any insurance claim or third-party claim you may lodge.
