An 8-year-old boy died, and several others were injured during an illegal drag racing in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, on Sunday night at about 19:44 on 8 January 2023.

BOY DIED IN ILLEGAL DRAG RACING

The boy died when the two cars involved in the illegal drag race were involved in an accident on the corner of Simunye Street and Mdikizela Drive in Daveyton.

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) reported that the vehicles hit several people aged between 9 and 27.

A white Toyota Etios and a white Nissan 1400 were engaged in an illegal drag race when the driver of the Toyota Etios lost control of his vehicle.

He collided with the Nissan and hit several children and adults walking on the sidewalk.

 “An 8-year-old boy died on the scene, and two boys aged 12 sustained slight injuries.

“They were transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment,” EMPD reported.

COMMUNITY ATTACK DRIVER AND SET TWO CARS ALIGHT

According to reports, three other pedestrians aged 12, 30, and 37 were treated for shock by emergency services.

When community members saw the boy had died, they attacked the driver of the Toyota Etios.

They also set his vehicle alight.

“He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment,” EMPD reported.

The unknown driver of the Nissan 1400 abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene on foot.

Community members also set his vehicle alight.

Drag racing is illegal and in this case the results were devastating leaving a young boy dead.

EMPD officer arrived on the scene shortly after the incident and restored order.

The boy’s remains was taken to the Springs Mortuary, and the EMPD opened a docket of culpable homicide at the Etwatwa police station.

The metro police urge member of the community to report illegal drag racing because it can lead to death like in the case of the young boy.

They also appealed to the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
