An 84-year-old doctor was charged for fraud after certifying a person dead, investigations later found the person was very much alive

The Hawks members from Durban Serious Commercial Crime Investigation charged an 84-year-old doctor for fraud on Thursday, 23 February 2023.

Doctor charged for fraud after certifying a living person dead

The suspect, who is a medical doctor, allegedly certified a dead body at the request of a funeral parlour owner in May 2020.

The suspect claimed that he saw a dead body and certified it as a death person.

Consequently, the Department of Home Affairs issued a death certificate, and the suspects claimed that the deceased was cremated.

The insurance company conducted an internal investigation and discovered that the deceased was alive, and the intention was to defraud the insurance company.

The company reported a case of fraud at Berea police station, and the Hawks members took over the case docket for intensive investigation.

After an intensive investigation, the Hawks members arrested the policy holder, Emmnuel Ponen (33), the claimant, Merlen Munusamy (45), and the funeral parlour owner, Sifiso Gabela (47), for fraud last year.

They charged all three for fraud and scheduled their appearance in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court on 17 March 2023.
