In our country at the moment, you blink once and there is another crisis. This evening, shocking details have emerged of a very suspicious break-in at the offices of Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng. In the early hours of Saturday morning 15 computers were stolen, in South Africa that may sound normal to you, wait till you look closely at the finer details.

The 15 computers are said to contain “sensitive information” on the Constitutional Court judges and officials.  The computers were stolen from the Human Resources area of the office on the 1st floor, journalists on the scene also reported that the thieves ignored easier to access computers on the ground floor, meaning they targeted those computers specifically.

Mogoeng’s spokesperson Nathi Mncube revealed more details about the robbers and what action the Chief Justice and his staff have taken since.

“The break-in was reported to the South African Police Services (SAPS) and various units from SAPS were dispatched to the OCJ to conduct further investigations. Upon being informed of this crime‚ the Chief Justice remarked that this must be viewed in a very serious light and the police ought to do everything in their power to ensure that the culprits are brought to book.”

This news comes just one day after the Constitutional Court ruled on the Sassa social grant debacle. The court ordered Sassa and CPS to continue to work together to pay grants for the next 12 months. Since the news of the robbery has broken media and political experts alike have been speaking on what this break-in can potentially mean. So far, all the major political parties have voiced their concern over the news.

The question though, is not “who” wanted the sensitive information but rather “what” they want it for. At this stage your guess is as good as anyone’s, this mafia style theft though is particularly worrying for our country. Especially when you consider that the Constitutional Court is one of the few non-corrupt sectors we have left. Something fishy is definitely going on…
