The recent attack on Charlie Hebdo head office in Paris has again brought to light the plight of journalists worldwide. Some report from war-torn regions where death is a daily occurrence, but there are those who are merely in the wrong place at the wrong time, as we can see in countries like Russia and India… countries we normally see as peaceful.

Freedom of the press has been stressed over and over in the last week, but Paris is not even the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the relentless assault on the global press. Here are the countries topping the list as global deathtraps for journos.

  • Iraq – 161
  • Phillipines – 76
  • Syria – 61
  • Algeria – 60
  • Russia – 56
  • Pakistan – 53
  • Somalia – 52
  • Colombia – 45
  • India – 32
  • Mexico – 29
  • Brazil – 27

The data in this list was collected between 2002 and 2013, but before you jump on your horse and belittle the death of these people, remember that the murder of a journalist is a direct attack on the freedoms and liberties that allow you to get on that proverbial horse in the first place.
