Western Cape Provincial Traffic Services has released a preliminary report from the New Year’s weekend and the stats tell quite a story. It’s easy to forget that many men and women work tirelessly – and often thanklessly – to enforce the law over busy weekends like New Year.

The Department of Transport and Public Works said it was “highly appreciative of the outstanding acts of courage that our traffic officers displayed over the weekend”.

Here are some of the key findings from the report.

3905: The number of vehicles screened for speeding

682: The number of speeding offences recorded

R410 650: The total amount of all fines issued over the weekend – these range from driver offences to roadworthy issues.

182km/h: The highest speed recorded in a 120km/h zone

146km/h: The highest speed recorded in a 100km/h zone

11: The number of deaths on the Western Cape’s roads over the weekend

12: The number of people arrested for allegedly drunk driving

30: The number of people arrested for allegedly drunk driving the previous year

3361: The number of drivers who were tested for drunk driving at road blocks

1.24mg of alcohol/1000 ml of breath: The highest breath alcohol reading recorded – over five times the legal limit

Five: The number of arrests over the New Year’s weekend for offences not related to drunk driving. Arrests were for false documentation in George; possession of 21 bags of abalone in Worcester; possession of 22 grams of khat in Worcester; bribery in Worcester; and possession of a stolen vehicle in George.
