Man accused of KILLING his family abandons bail application

Police spokesperson Selvy Mohlala says they discovered the lifeless bodies when they forced entry into the home.

The man accused of killing his wife and three children in a horrific incident in Mkhondo on Friday has abandoned his bail application.

SUSPECT APPEARED IN COURT ON MONDAY

The man, 55-year-old Afrika Shongwe, appeared in the Piet Retief Magistrate’s court on Monday. 

Police spokesperson, Selvy Mohlala says that Shongwe was charged with four counts of murder and contravention of the Immigration Act after authorities established that he is from Eswatini

The case has been postponed to 27 Mach for further investigations.

According to police, the 47-year-old mother was hacked to death together with her two sons, aged 11, and a 6-year-old daughter in their family house at Phola Park. 

MORE ABOUT THE GRUESOME CASE

The bodies of the family consisting of twin boys, 11, and a young girl, 6, were discovered by the police at their home in Phola Park, Thandukukhanya on Friday. 

This happened after family members laid a complaint with law enforcement officers. According to the family they had made several attempts to get ahold of the deceased.

An axe, which the police believe was used to kill the mother and her children, was also found in the room.

POLICE SPOKESPERSON WEIGHS IN

Police spokesperson Selvy Mohlala says that the police discovered the lifeless bodies in the kitchen and one room when they forced entry into the home. Mohlala says that the four-roomed house was locked from the outside. 

“When proceeding with the search, the woman’s body, her 11-year-old son, and her 6-year-old daughter were found lying dead in one of the rooms. An axe believed to have been used to eliminate them was also found in the same room,” Mohlala said.

Mohlala said the body found in the kitchen was that of the other twin boy.
