The new Honda Civic Type R takes on another Japanese hot hatch in the form of the Toyota GR Yaris in an epic drag race.
UK motoring Youtube channel Carwow pits the latest Honda Civic Type R against the first-ever GR Yaris from Toyota.

The Yaris GR is powered by world’s most powerful three-cylinder engine with power rated at 198kW and 360Nm from its 1.6-litre turbopetrol mill. The Toyota is only available with a six-speed manual gearbox. It tips the scale at 1 280kg. Due to its rally roots, the GR Yaris is fitted with an all-wheel-drive system that be configured via a rotary dial to send 70% of power to the rear axle.

The Type R is a powered by a 2.0-litre turbopetrol engine with a massive 245kW and 420Nm. Unlike the GR Yaris, the Honda sends its power to the front axle only. It also uses a short-throw six-speed manual gearbox, and weighs 1 429kg.The Type R is yet to launch in South Africa, with the carmaker yet to confirm whether it will be available, iol reports.
Locally Toyota offers one specification of the GR Yaris called ‘Rally’. It is equipped with a Torsen limited-slip differential on both the front and rear axle, performance-tuned suspension, revised power-steering assistance and 18-inch BBS forged alloy wheels – shod with Michelin Pilot Sport 4s tyres.

Toyota says in addition to the mechanical upgrades, the Rally model also boasts combination leather/Alcantara sports seats in the front with enhanced bolstering, leather rear seats, Heads-up Display (HUD), the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) active safety suite and Active Noise Control. Active Noise Control amplifies the engine sound by cancelling out opposing frequencies – adding a vocal soundtrack.
