Toyota South Africa has revealed pricing for its new entry-level Vitz, and replaces the Agya as its most affordable offering to local customers.

If you’re wondering why the car looks a tad familiar, it’s because Toyota has taken the Suzuki Celerio and well, chucked its badge onto the diminutive hatch. The two Japanese brands have a partnership that has seen three other models go under the same operation.

THE VITZ IS NOW TOYOTA’S MOST AFFORDABLE CAR SOLD IN SA

I first saw the hatchback at Toyota’s State of the Motor Industry (SOMI) event earlier this year. Toyota said: “It takes over the mantle from the outgoing Agya which has already established our presence in the A segment. It will be in showrooms during the second quarter of this year.”

According to the Citizen, the new car is mechanically identical to its Suzuki sibling and is powered by the Celerio-sourced 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine producing 49kW and 89Nm. A five-speed manual gearbox is available on the base 1.0 and Xr models. An automated manual transmission is also offered in Xr spec.

The claimed top speed is 160km/h and the Japanese carmaker says the Vitz will sip just 4.4l per 100km on the combined cycle for the manual models and 4.2l per 100km for the automatic version.

The base model and Xr both include standard items such as ABS and EBD, Vehicle Stability Control, Rear Parking sensors, air conditioning and two front airbags.
