George Russell says he expects to see Max Verstappen on his rear view mirror “pretty quickly” ahead of Sunday’s Miami Grand Prix.

The two drivers clashed following the conclusion of the Baku Sprint race last week which was won by Red Bull’s Sergio Perez.

Both Russell and Verstappen made contact at Turn 2, which saw the Mercedes driver move to third place ahead of the reigning world champion after the first lap. The Redbull driver, though, managed to reclaim his position by passing Russell after the Safety Car restart, but had damage to his car for the rest of the Sprint race.

After the race, there was a  frosty exchange between Verstappen and Russell with both drivers going on to give their thoughts on the battle.

Russell said Verstappen’s reaction was ‘pathetic’

Russell explained to Verstappen that he struggled with grip but Verstappen was having none of it and even told the British driver he should expect the same treatment. As Russell was walking away, the two-time F1 champion called him a d***head.

Russell hit back though, saying the Dutch driver spat his dummy out when other drivers go ‘hard racing’ on him.

“It was all a little bit pathetic. I think something you learn as a kid is if you’re going to give something you’ve got to be willing to take it as well,’ the 25-year-old told Sky Sports.

“He’s had his fair share of giving moves like that and being tough and hard at racing and it’s a little bit poor to see how he sort of spat his dummy out when it was the first time he probably got something back in the same regard,” he said.

The two are expected to renew their rivalrly this Sunday at the Miami GP

Russell qualified 6th on the grid while Verstappen starts from 9th and is expected to make his way up the field very quickly as he aims to extend his lead at the top. The British driver though is expected to give him a run for his money should the two go side by side again.
