Peugeot South Africa (PSA) will be introducing fresh flair into the country’s hotly contested SUV market come February — and it will take the form of the French brand’s striking, second generation 2008.

While undoubtedly a looker, which Peugeot pitches as an “escape from the ordinary”, the 2008 also promises a design dedicated to its owner’s lifestyle, a vehicle founded on next generation technology, and an SUV driven by selection of powerful, fuel efficient combustion engines.

Going from strength to strength

The first Peugeot 2008 was introduced to the public in 2013 following its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March of the same year. The 2008 was just 4.16m long, making it just slightly longer than most superminis. However, it offered the higher driving position that crossover users wanted and could be fitted with large 17-inch alloy wheels.

The original Peugeot 2008 was updated with more tech and upgraded engines for the 2016 facelifted model. The distinctive differences from the original model were the new vertical grille, wheel arch extensions, new black-and-chrome headlight casings and stoplights along with new rim designs. The interior came with LED dome lights, more storage compartments, Mirror Screen, Apple Carplay and more.

Power came from either 1.2-litre petrol or a 1.6-litre diesel engine, but each came in two or three power outputs and could be matched to a five-speed manual, five-speed auto or a six-speed auto gearbox. New top level GT Line trims were also introduced. The facelifted Peugeot 2008 achieved sales of more than a million units before the unveiling of its second generation.

Prepare for more remarkable features

But, said PSA in a recent media statement, more of the remarkable features of the stunning second-generation Peugeot 2008 will be revealed at its launch in February.

“Our exciting and reassuring vision of the future is confirmed once again by the new Peugeot 2008 SUV. In anticipation of the local launch, we are very pleased to share the model line up and pricing. We are also able to confirm that the locally marketed new 2008 will be available in six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions, matched to a single petrol engine, with differing outputs,” revealed Peugeot.

Further details on the new 2008 and its reveal will be made available closer to its launch date.
