Sebastian Vettel to leave Ferrari at the end of 2020 season

Vettel’s future in F1 has become uncertain after the announcement that the German driver and Scuderia Ferrari will part ways at the end of the 2020 season.

Ferrari contract negotiations have been taking place over the past few months with team Principal Mattia Binotto earlier stating that the team’s intentions were to retain Vettel into the future beyond 2020. But, it seems those negotiations have ended in the unexpected decision for both parties to go their separate ways.

“My relationship with Scuderia Ferrari will finish at the end of 2020,” said Vettel. “In order to get the best possible results in this sport, it’s vital for all parties to work in perfect harmony. The team and I have realised that there is no longer a common desire to stay together beyond the end of this season. Financial matters have played no part in this joint decision. That’s not the way I think when it comes to making certain choices and it never will be.”

Vettel to finish strong

It is yet another twist in the 2020 season that is now set to start in July, with fewer races and in the initial phases at least, no fans. Vettel remains committed to finishing well.

“My immediate goal is to finish my long stint with Ferrari, in the hope of sharing some more beautiful moments together, to add to all those we have enjoyed so far.”

Mattia Binotto says the decision was an amicable one that suited both parties.

“This is a decision taken jointly by ourselves and Sebastian, one which both parties feel is for the best. It was not an easy decision to reach, given Sebastian’s worth as a driver and as a person.”

Mattia was quick to celebrate the four-time World Champion’s accolades and quality.

“Sebastian is already part of the Scuderia’s history, with his 14 Grands Prix wins making him the third most successful driver for the team, while he is also the one who has scored the most points with us.”

Beyond 2020

With a number of driver contracts due to end in 2020, including that of Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes F1, the driver market remains open for business.

Rumours abound with talks of Daniel Ricciardo making a play for a Ferrari seat or even Carlos Sainz moving from Mclaren. Charles Leclerc’s contract runs until 2024 and with a stellar performance in 2019 beating Vettel in the driver’s championship, Charles may find himself with yet another superstar beside him in 2021 and beyond.
