While McLaren would much rather be running at the front of the pack this weekend in Monaco, the next best way to get some column inches in the press is to race with a dope livery on its cars … in this instance a triple crown livery as part of the firm’s 60th anniversary.

WHAT IS THE TRIPLE CROWN EXACTLY?

Fair question, if you’re not a total motorsport anorak. If you’ve won the Monaco Grand Prix, 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Indy 500, congrats, you are a triple crown winner. Drivers can earn this accolade, as can constructors.

Graham Hill is the only driver to achieve the rare feat, and McLaren is the only car builder to date. The yellow, white and gray livery calls back to its classic racers that competed and won each of the iconic events.

TELL US MORE ABOUT THE LIVERY

No McLaren livery would be complete without papaya orange. Then, rather cleverly, there’s a white/orange chevron as a nod to its time sponsored by Marlboro, of course tobacco advertising is banned nowadays.

Specifically, the orange is that of the 1974 McLaren M16C/D race car that won Indy 500 and the white nods to the 1984 McLaren MP4/2, that won the Monaco GP with Alain Prost at the wheel. The gray frontal aspects borrow the shade worn by stunning McLaren F1 GTR that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995.

IT’S NOT JUST F1 RUNNING THE LIVERY

Nope, while McLaren has more wins in Monaco than any other, 15, the Arrow McLaren team running at Indy will also run special liveries to celebrate the legendary achievement. Let’s wait and see if the special aesthetic can get them further up the finishing order.
