Watch: First laps for the newly launched Red Bull RB16 race car

In stark contrast to Ferrari’s razzmatazz, Red Bull released a single image of its new RB16 to launch before a shakedown at the Silverstone circuit.

Ferrari gave us a choir, orchestra and ballet dancers as it unveiled the new SF1000. Less than 24 hours later, Red Bull gave us just one single image of its RB16.

The Milton Keynes team, though, did redeem itself as Max Verstappen put in the very first laps of the year in a new-for-2020 Formula 1 car.

Red Bull show off the RB16

Saving a buck, or just keeping priorities in order, Red Bull opted for an extremely low-key launch of its 2020 F1 car.

The Honda-powered RB16 was unveiled to the world in a single image that the team released on social media.

Even the accompanying press released had little to say.

“It’s straight back to business in our iconic matte livery as the Bulls pick up where they left off and prepare to charge into the 2020 Formula One season,” said the team.

Hours later, Red Bull made up for that as they released footage of the RB16’s first laps out on track.

First laps for Red Bull’s RB16

Verstappen, winner of eight grands prix, had the honour of not only shaking down the new car but he was also the very first driver to cover a lap in a 2020 F1 car.

The 22-year-old exited the Silverstone pits to begin his 2020 preparations.

Under F1 regulations, teams can run their cars on non-test days but they are limited to 100km

Alexander Albon, who remains with Red Bull for 2020 having promoted mid-season, will only drive the car when pre-season testing begins on 19 February.

No major changes to the RB16

In keeping with the stable rules for 2020, the RB16 is an evolution of last year’s car.

There is not a whole lot different to the naked eye, although Red Bull have tightened the rear bodywork and tweaked the nose design.

That features two slots in the tip, a play on yesteryear’s hole.

With the livery the same as last year’s RB15, even Albon took to Twitter to have a little dig.

Renault is next in line

Renault will be the next team to launch its 2020 challengers, the RS20.

The Enstone-based team is opting for a mix of Ferrari and Red Bull as, while they are holding an event, they won’t be showing the actual car.

Instead the works team will release images of the car while Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon answer questions.
