Ferrari paid homage to its Italian roots at its 2020 car reveal, taking the covers off an SF1000 at the Romolo Valli Theatre.

The theatre, located in the city of Reggio Emilia where Italy’s national flag was born, was the backdrop for the first live launch of the 2020 Formula 1 season.

SF1000 to commemorate Ferrari’s upcoming 1000th race

Seeking to end Mercedes’ winning streak, Ferrari took the covers off a “more red” SF1000 on Tuesday night in a presentation that came with a choir, orchestra and acrobats.

The car has been named the SF1000 to commemorate Ferrari’s upcoming 1000th F1 grand prix, a milestone it will reach in F1’s 70th season.

“We are celebrating the 1000th grand prix for Scuderia Ferrari and 70 years for Formula 1,” said team boss Mattia Binotto.

“Ferrari has always been there, we haven’t missed one year.

“We are the team winning the most, the one that has always been there.

“Competition is part of our DNA. Ferrari will also be part of F1.”

But while Ferrari may be the most successful team on the grid, they have not won a championship in 13 years.

Ferrari has not won a Constructors’ Championship since 2008 while the last driver to win a World Championship in famous red was Kimi Raikkonen back in 2007.

A few changes to the new car

Although the 2020 car bears a notable resemblance to last season’s SF90, it is a new beast for Ferrari.

This year’s rules are the same as last season’s meaning the cars will all be evolutions of the 2019 models.

Binotto believes Ferrari have taken the best from 2019 and improved it for this year’s SF1000.

“The regulations remain stable so certainly we have streamlined the concept to maximise performance and downforce level.

“The car is packaged to have a narrow body shape. The suspension has been redesigned to help with set-up.

“We put a lot of effort to keep the weight down.

“We have worked a lot on the power unit, on the packaging and the performance.”

Vettel keeps faith with Ferrari

Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc will continue to form Ferrari’s driver line-up.

Last season the duo managed just three wins, something they are hoping to improve this year.

“It is impossible to predict the season,” said Vettel. “But a lot of hours and effort into the car.

“It is a step forward, I hope it feels like that.

“There is commitment from a lot of people, working right now to improve the car even further. That is something we have rely on, trust on.

“For the rest part of the adventure is to be patient, and have to wait.”
