New car sales: South Africa’s top 20 best-selling cars for April

The latest new car sales data has been released, we look at the top 30 best-selling cars in South Africa for April 2023.

New car sales data for April has been released and as one would expect the likes of Toyota and Volkswagen are at the top of the chart.

Just over 24 000 new cars were sold last month. This number was over 1500 less sold in April 2022 and underlines the economic constraints South Africans are faced with amid high inflation and the likelihood of another interest rate hike at the end of May.

SMALL HATCHES AND SUVS DOMINATE THE NEW CAR SALES LIST

We recently reported that the new Ford Ranger climbed above the Toyota Hilux as South Africa’s best-selling vehicle in April.

The US brand sold flogged 2201 units last month despite the period punctuated by no trading due to several public holidays. In comparison, Toyota registered 2186 Hilux sales.

THE CHINESE CARMAKERS CONTINUE TO STEAL MARKET SHARE

Now we’re turning our attention to new car sales data for passenger vehicles, and the ubiquitous Volkswagen Polo Vivo was the country’s top-selling passenger car with 1510 units sold.

Toyota’s locally-built Corolla Cross was in second spot with 1281 units sold. Suzuki’s Swift put in another stellar performance, cloking third spot with 1216 sales, according to IOL.

A special mention goes to Chinese carmakers that sees the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro (708) and the Haval Jolion (677) for placing in the top 10 of the new car sales chart.

According to Naamsa, the Automotive Business Council, 24 174 new passenger cars were registered in April. In comparison to the same period in 2023 25 735 new cars were sold.

The car dealer accounted for the largest segmentation pool of passenger cars at 21 528 units or 89.1%, with car rental,
individual corporate fleets and government sales accounting for 6.2%; 3.1%; and 1.7% respectively.
