Twitter users have reacted in disbelief – and pure envy – after a Xhosa boy from Delmas, Mpumalanga, was rewarded with expensive gifts after completing his initiation.

Pictures of the extravagant spoils went viral on social media.

XHOSA BOY’S PICS OF PRICEY GIFTS GO VIRAL

In pics posted on Twitter, a tweep revealed how a 16-year-old boy from Delmas received over R1,2 million in gifts during his Xhosa Umgidi ceremony. This, following his initiation at a local school for boys in the province.

The tweep shared: “This past weekend a young man was presented with a new Golf 8, a truck, Toyota Quantum, and R1,2 million in gifts for going to Xhosa initiation school in Delmas by his father”.

According to another tweep, the boy even had a welcome home party last weekend in which stars like Mlindo The Vocalist and Boohle performed.

In the ancient Xhosa tradition known as “Ulwaluko”, a boy undergoes a physical and mental initiation ritual, which signifies him “becoming a man”. During this initiation, the foreskin of a boy’s penis is removed by elders.

According to an essay in the African Journal of Primary Health Care & Family Medicine, a Xhosa initiation is significant for many reasons; including “personal growth and development, independence and knowledge gained, a connection with ancestors and initiation into manhood”.

TWEEPS ARE JEALOUS!

The initiation gifts following the grand Xhosa celebration were enough to give tweeps chest pains.
