After bringing the top prize home in 2020, Table Mountain has once again been nominated as Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction at the 2021 World Travel Awards, with the Cableway Company saying that they’re also aiming to see Cape Town’s iconic centrepiece named the World’s Leading Tourist Attraction

Table Mountain nominated for Africa’s leading travel destination

Giselle Esau, Table Mountain Marketing and Branding Manager, told eNCA on Tuesday that the nomination is a rare bit of news during a time in which South Africa’s travel and Tourism industries have been devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.

“This is exactly what we need – especially in the travel industry where we’ve had a really hard year. Last year we won Africa’s leading tourist attraction in the midst of a heavy lockdown so we’re very happy to get that nomination again,” she said, adding that they also want to take home the world’s leading attraction award.

“The travel industry – especially in South Africa – has been so hard hit by bad news and closures or shutdowns, so we’re very happy to have something to look forward to in the next few months,” said Esau. “We’re also excited to unite the country – Table Mountain doesn’t just belong to Cape Town. This is another way that we want to build team spirit in the country and bring it home.”

The V&A Waterfront in Cape Town and the Kruger National Park also got the nod for a nomination, and Esau said that industry camaraderie is vital during these difficult times.

“We don’t really consider the other local nominations competition because we always want to see them succeed as well, and we’re definitely pushing behind them,” said Esau.
