It’s no secret that Woolworths is the “private school” of food retailers in South Africa, and the proof is in the taste – and price tag!

Woolworths is known for both its quality luxury goods and reasonably priced staple items.

But whether for bare essentials or decadent spoils, customers keep coming back, despite rising food prices.

FIVE PRICEY WOOLWORTHS ITEMS CUSTOMERS LOVE

In recent months, Woolworths topped the Twitter trends list after customers complained about the rising costs of their favourite items.

And this week, the high-end retailer did it again after Survivor South Africa host Nico Panagio called them out over their regular price hikes. But according to the store, prince increases are often their last resort.

They said in a statement to News24: “At Woolworths, we strive to keep our price increases to an absolute minimum.

“There are, however, circumstances which often lie outside our control which have an impact on price adjustments. We will only accept a price adjustment as a last resort after exploring all avenues to prevent one.”

Nevertheless, here are five popular but pricey items customers complained about …

Milk

This week’s Woolworths debate kicked off after one tweep compared the prices of store-brand milk. Unsurprisingly the retailer topped the list for the most expensive brand.

But while many customers called out Woolies for the hefty price tags, others justified that the price matched the store’s quality standards.

Bread

Woolworths stock a variety of specialty loaves of bread that cater to all tastes and diets. Despite having a market for it, tweeps were not convinced of the price tag attached to this loaf of gluten-free bread.

Rotisserie chicken

Love it or loathe it, the buttery grilled chicken remains a favourite on Woolies ready-made meal selection.

However, people are not loving the price tag, which has increased significantly in recent months.

Pies

Customers have complained that Woolworths has hiked the price of their pies from R26,99 to R34,99 – a small fortune – in recent months.

Tin roof ice cream

And finally, one of Woolworth’s most-loved items is their house brand of ice cream – the most popular one being Tin Roof!

But is it worth the price?
