Mmusi, Gayton and more: SA’s elite party with billionaire Rob Hersov

Rob Hersov invited the likes of Central Karoo’s newly elected mayor Gayton McKenzie to his three-day birthday bash in Cape Town.

South African businessman Rob Hersov hosted South Africa’s elite for a lavish three-day birthday party for him and his wife Kate over the first weekend of May.

According to News24, some of the attendees included One South Africa leader Mmusi Maimane who was described on the guestlist as a “political rockstar in SA”.

WHO IS ROB HERSOV? 

Rob Hersov comes from a long line of businessmen. His grandfather, Bob Hersov, founded one of the biggest mining companies in southern Africa, AngloVaal, which was run by his father Basil between 1973 and 2001. 

The Cape Town-based businessman, who is also a Harvard Business alumnus, is the chairman and chief executive of Invest Africa, an investment platform that runs in Johannesburg, New York, Dubai and Geneva, Switzerland. 

According to Crunch Base, Hersov is also the chairman of VistaJet, a private aviation company, the African Leadership Network and Adoreum, an exclusive membership-only club for business people, academics, philanthropists and entrepreneurs. 

ROB HERSOV’S BILLIONAIRE BASH 

As per News24, Rob Hersov’s three-day billionaire bash took place at several locations, including The Lookout at the V&A Waterfront. The publication reports that Hersov’s birthday party, which was dubbed the “Hersov 100” as it celebrated his 60th and his wife Kate’s 40th birthdays, included “inappropriate behaviour”. 

There were several high-profile attendees, including the mayor of the Central Karoo and Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie and former Steinhoff chairman Christo Wiese. 

Local radio personality Gareth Cliff was also invited to the party.

‘CAPE WINELANDS AIRPORT’

In 2021 it was reported that Rob Hersov bought Fisantekraal airfield with plans to transform it into another airport for Cape Town. 

He told BizNews that he wants to build “the Lanseria Airport of Cape Town” and plans on renaming it “Cape Winelands Airport”. 

The airport, based 13km outside of Durbanville, has four runways. Two are used as film sets by local filmmakers.
