If you have ever experienced a night on the town in Cape Town, you would know there is no limit to the variety of bars in the bustling city. Indeed, it can feel pretty daunting for strangers to the city to choose between an endless array of unique and charming options.

Two of Cape Town’s bars have now earned themselves international recognition with a spot on the World’s Best Bars list.

The Art of Duplicity- Cape Town’s ‘best-kept secret’

Interestingly, it seems that one of Cape Town’s ‘best-kept secrets’ has been made public on a global scale.

The Art of Duplicity is ironically famous for its mystery, hidden away behind a storefront. This mysterious gem has moved up two spots since last year to earn itself 86th place on the list.

Owner David Donde says that this came as a ‘super surprise’ to them. Speaking to Cape Town Etc, Donde explains that they didn’t expect to make a cut at all due to COVID-19

“We were super surprised to be included this year – and to have moved up from 88 to 86. Even more surprised that a South African bar made it onto the list, given the travel has been an issue and judges need to have visited the bar in person,”

Cause | Effect Cocktail Kitchen

The second Cape Town bar to make the cut is Cause | Effect Cocktail Kitchen. Award-winning mixologist Kurt Schlechter and his partner James ‘Trigger’ Phillips are credited as the brains behind this outfit.

The outlet is self-dubbed as “kinda classy, kinda hood”. Food and drink leans heavily on locally inspired concepts.

The fact that both bars managed to not only best international competitors but also overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic makes this victory so much sweeter.

In conclusion, it remains clear that South Africans continue to compete with the best in the world irrespective of how uneven the playing field is.
