Within the next four years, Woolworths want to have an operation that is free of all nonrecyclable plastics. In fact, their battle to save the environment is already well underway.
In comments shared with BusinessDay, Woolworths group head of sustainability Feroz Koor revealed that the retailer will be ramping up their strategy to become more environmentally friendly.
Plastic materials have come under intense scrutiny in recent times, due to the devastating impact they’re having on this planet. Marine life is bearing the brunt of these nonrecyclables, as plastic consumption in fish rises to record levels.
There was widespread condemnation last week when a whale was found dead in Thailand after swallowing 80 plastic bags. It’s these heartbreaking scenarios which are forcing change in the way big business operates.
Koor has said the company is now “working closely with recyclers” to phase out their usage of plastic materials. So, what plastics are destined for the chop?
It’s with great pride today, on World Environment Day, to announce that by 2022 all of our own-brand plastic packaging will be reusable and recyclable.

They aren’t stopping there, either. Woolies are looking to bring in vending machines which dispense recyclable goods for their customers, too. The retailer is certainly showing initiative in their bid to make the world a greener place.
