The flower season in the West Coast National Park peaks from August to September every year.

West Coast National Park acting park manager Pierre Nel said that there has been good rains this year, therefore making for an “excellent” flower season.

Good rains make for great flower season

“The good rains, which the area has received this year, should make for an excellent flower-viewing season. We anticipate the flowers to be good from the second half of August up until mid-September,” said Nel in a statement.

During the peak flower season visitors can be expected to see flower species such as  suurvy, elandsvy, gouwsblom, bokbaai vygie, white rain daisy, sporrie, Magriet, and suituintjie in full bloom.

The Postberg section of the park has been opened already.

Here’s what time the park open and close, as well as the entry fees.

PARK OPENING AND CLOSING TIMES

The general park, which is approximately an hour away from Cape Town, opens at 07:00 to 18:00 daily in August and until 19:00 in September.

While the Postberg section, which is slightly further away, opens at 09:00 daily and the last entry for the day is at 16:30. Postberg is already open for visitors and will close on 30 September at the end of the park’s peak flower season.

West Coast National Park suggest visiting on a sunny day and on weekdays if possible; as weekends get very busy. The Mooimaak area will also be opened for viewing.

“Weekend days are often very busy with queues developing at the gate, and congestion in the flower viewing areas. The Mooimaak Area will also be open for flower viewing,” said Nel.

While the COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing visitors are encouraged to social distance, wear a mask and sanitise as West Coast National Park follows strict COVID-19 protocols.
