A young South African woman has gone viral after sharing how much money she is forking out just to be “present” at her friend’s wedding. Unsurprisingly, her post sparked an interesting conversation around the sometimes ridiculous price of weddings and the even more absurd idea that the bridal party or groomsmen are forced to pay outrageous amounts of money just to be a part of the wedding.

Bridesmaid shared how much money she paid to be in wedding

A young woman with the Twitter handle @Micylaaa recently shed an important light on the ridiculous costs of weddings these days.

While in the past, weddings were mostly about the union, they have now become extravagant affairs which require ridiculous amounts of money.

Micyla proved this to be the case when she tweeted that she had to fork out R10 000 for a Pretoria wedding which she’ll be attending as a bridesmaid.

She was so shocked by this that she even added that eloping should become a new norm to avoid these costly events.

“I’m a bridesmaid at a wedding in Pretoria this weekend and I’ve spent almost 10k just to be present. Normalise eloping cos weddings are k*k expensive’” she wrote.

“I think putting that kind of financial pressure on people is extremely unfair. Did you have to buy a dress you wont wear again?”

“I was also a bridesmaid in march and it was painful to spend all that money. I hated every part of it and couldn’t wait for all of it to be over:smiling_face_with_tear:

“ Back in the days it never used to be like this well at least where I’m from, the bride used to take care of everything but now yes you pay everything. For me it’s ridiculous because you are the one inviting me!”
