Tonight we will witness the largest full moon of 2019 with the northern hemisphere treated to what has been dubbed a full snow supermoon.

During last month’s blood moon we also bore witness to a Supermoon but this month the moon is ever so slightly closer to the earth.

The moon will appear 30 percent larger than at its greatest distance from the earth.

The Supermoon is visible all over the world with the best viewing time just after sunset but there are also a number of live streams of the event available.

The moon will be at its closest point to earth all year tonight, giving us some extreme tides and some people even claim their mood and demeanor is effected by the moon.

The term supermoon is unscientific, if such things concern you then you would be better off saying that the moon will reach perigree, or its closest point to the earth in its current orbit, tonight.

The Space News stream began earlier today and is ongoing. The stream provides a view of the moon via telescope put to music.

For those eager on something a little more illuminating, Slooh’s live stream of the Supermoon begins at 2:00 SAST on 20 February. The show will make use of the Canary Islands telescope and includes a discussion between astronomy author and journalist, Bob Berman and Slooh’s Paul Cox and Dr. Paige Godfrey.
