Tennis legend Roger Federer recently shared an epic ‘throwback’ to his Match in Africa charity tennis match in Cape Town.

Federer took the time to share a video featuring some of the highlights of the match that took place on 7 February 2020 at Cape Town Stadium. It is here where match organisers confirmed the crowd of 51 954 broke the world record attendance figure for a tennis match set in November 2019 – then Federer beat Germany’s Alexander Zverev in Mexico City in front of 42 517 fans.

The Cape Town event, which saw Federer take on Rafael Nadal as well as Bill Gates and Trevor Noah, also raised $3.5 million (R52 664 500) for the 20-Grand Slam champion’s Roger Federer Foundation.

“What an unforgettable night: we raised 3.5 million USD for the vulnerable children in the region. Achieved a world record with more than 51 000 spectators at a tennis match and had so much fun. Thanks to the three inspiring philanthropists Rafa, Bill and Trevor for having shared this emotional moment,” Federer later shared on Instagram.

“Thanks to the hundreds of people who organized this Match in Africa and created a high-class event. But most of all, thank you, South Africa. Thank you Cape Town for your overwhelming support and for making a difference for those in need,” he added.

A magical evening

“It was a magical evening,” Federer, who came to South Africa regularly on childhood vacations with his family but hadn’t been to Cape Town in 20 years, said further.

“Match in Africa for me has been a magical experience. This was the sixth one. I’ve played against my rivals, my friends and all for a good cause to raise funds for the Roger Federer Foundation…you’re supporting me and I can’t thank you enough,” Federer said.

Nadal later said that it was an experience of a lifetime playing in front of such an amazing crowd in an amazing stadium. This was also Nadal’s first time in Cape Town. He said before the match that he was looking forward to it.

“Roger and I have shared so many magical moments on and off the court. Travelling with him to Cape Town and playing for the benefit of children is something I am very excited about. It will be my first time in the region with Roger as a tour guide – that will be fun.”
