The photo that helped reunite the hero with the woman he saved went viral after Nicole Alisha put it on Facebook. She explained in her post how she saw a “true hero” jump out of his car, remove his clothes and rush off to help a lady in her floating car.

The woman was 60-year-old Janet Hart whose mother-in-law saw the picture of Mbhele online. Although at the time, Hart was petrified, she remembered that her saviour had been wearing blue underpants, and it was because of this that her mother-in-law was able to recognize her daughter-in-law’s hero.

When Mbhele was able to be identified and contacted, the Harts arranged to meet him so that they could thank him in person for saving Janet’s life.

At a tearful meeting, Ricky Hart handed a cheque to Mbhele to show his appreciation for his selfless act, and for carrying his wife to safety.

He said, “This is from the Hart family, all my kids, grandchildren and my mother who is 85-years-old. And we all just say: Ngiyabonga kakhulu. You really don’t know what you’ve done for us. I’ve got my wife back in one piece and it’s because of you.”

Hart asked where Mbhele had gone after rescuing her, as she had wanted to get his name and details, but he explained that he had gone back into the water to try and save others.

After meeting the Harts and receiving their gift, Mbhele humbly replied, “I didn’t expect anything. I was just doing my duty.”
