Looking back: London’s tribute

Looking back: London’s tribute to Madiba

It was very poignant time and a honour to be part of the celebrations of Mandela’s life in London.

Looking back: London’s tribute

It all started on the night of the film première of Mandela’s life “Long Walk To Freedom” in London’s Leicester Square.

As the final credits slipped across the screen, the audience sat back in reflection; then surprisingly Anant Singh came back on stage. His solemn face was a foretaste of what was to come. When he broke the sad news that Mandela had passed away a few hours ago the audience sat motionless and silent. Idris Elba who played Mandela in the film, and had accompanied Anant Singh on-stage couldn’t contain his sadness. Although the film was finished the audience didn’t move for at least 20 minutes, just taking in the news that our hero was gone.

I was then inspired to set out across London to film the various celebrations and events commemorating Mandela’s life. From official memorial services in Westminster Parliament and the church of St Martins-in the-fields; to vigils held by ordinary people outside South Africa House, side by side with MP’s and others who fought for Mandela’s release and fought for the freedom for all his people.

This is my small contribution to the country I love and the legacy we need to continue to uphold.
