The Loerie Awards awarded the best of the best in advertising in Durban this past week. For over 40 years, the Loeries – a nonp-profit association – has been ‘pushing, championing and sharing creativity and innovation’.

The Loeries is Africa and the Middle East’s premier award that recognizes, rewards, inspires and fosters creative excellence in the advertising and brand communication industry. Winning a Loerie is said to be the highest accolade for creativity and innovation.

Entries for the Loerie Awards closed earlier in this year after which the work was judged anonymously in two rounds – this means that the judges do not know the agency that entered the work and judge only on the merit of the entry.

Loerie Awards 2019: Best TV Ads

At the Loerie Awards, the following South African advertisements and agencies won their respective awards:

Nando’s from M&C Saatchi Abel

This ad made its debut in September 2018 and is the only television ad that received a Grand Prix reward at the Loeries. The advertisement was seen as Nando’s hilariously throwing some shade at Absa’s ‘Africanacity’ ad.

This ad features an inebriated man who cannot remember that he had already called his friend to wish him a happy birthday. The advertisment reads: “We won’t judge your reasons for needing double your data, #wegotu.”

The Legend of Big John for Chicken Licken from Joe Public

Even though the advertisement was banned in South Africa in 2018 by the Advertising Regulatory Board, it still won at the Loerie Awards.
