Sixteen-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg recently explained why she traveled to America in a zero emissions boat and talked about the direct impact climate change has on the planet while in conversation with Trevor Noah on The Daily Show.

Greta initially sailed to the States, from the UK, on an emission-free racing yacht to attend the UN Climate Action Summit in New York that will be held on 21 September (Youth UN Climate Action Summit) and 23 September.

“I have stopped flying because of the enormous impact aviation has on the climate,” she ultimately told Trevor.

It is believed that 2% of global human CO2 emissions are produced by the aviation industry.

“[I did it] just to take a stand. I am one of the very few people in the world who can actually do such a trip.”

According to Getaway, Trevor asked why she thinks there is a generational divide between young people, who seem far more concerned about the environment and older generations. She says that she thinks that the younger generations see climate change as more of a direct threat. ‘Others feel like, “I won’t be alive then anyway, so screw it”‘.

She also commented on the lack of awareness about climate change.

“The awareness is not as it needs to be. People are still very unaware. It’s my experience.”

On Instagram, she also said that ‘the science is clear’.

“We must start bending the emissions curve steeply downwards no later than 2020, if we still are to have a chance of staying below a 1,5 degrees of global temperature rise. We still have a window of time when things are in our own hands. But that window is closing fast.

“That is why I have decided to make this trip now [to New York]. During the past year, millions of young people have raised their voice to make world leaders wake up to the climate and ecological crisis.”

More about Greta Thunberg:

Greta has reportedly taken the year off from school to focus on her activism. Her activism has sparked the international Fridays for Future climate strike movement amongst schoolchildren.

Her campaigns have given momentum to the flygskam movement, an anti-flying movement argues that people should feel ashamed to take a plane because of its negative environmental impact.

She has also addressed delegates at a previous UN climate conference and World Economic Forum meeting as well as the parliaments of France and Britain.

As of yesterday, Greta made her way to Capitol Hill. She testified at The House Committee on Foreign Affairs and then went on to address Members of Congress in the Ways and Means Committee Hearing Room.
