Bosasa CEO Gavin Watson has died in a traffic accident, after the car he was travelling in allegedly slammed into a concrete pillar near OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. The news was confirmed just after 11:00. A culpable homicide case is now being investigated by authorities

It’s believed that police have been trying to inform his next of kin before any further information is revealed, but the vehicle crashed into a structure which was holding up a highway bridge. The deceased is thought to have died instantly, with paramedics unable to do anything to save his life.

We’re still awaiting confirmation of any other fatalities, but the outlook is bleak: Footage of the incident’s aftermath has since surfaced online, and it isn’t a pretty sight. The wreckage shows a front-end completely folded in on itself, with debris scattered across the highway. The Toyota Corolla has been completely written off.

Gavin Watson accident: What we know so far

It’s thought that the accident took place in the early hours of Monday morning, before the morning rush hour. There was an initial hesitancy to confirm Watson was the deceased, as law enforcement only revealed that a Bosasa executive in his seventies was involved in the crash.

There have been suspicions raised about the vehicle Watson was travelling in, and the nature of the crash. But the police aren’t entertaining any speculation as they fight to establish the facts on this case. Given Gavin Watson’s public profile and relationship with political figures, the rumour mill has been in overdrive.

Who is Gavin Watson?

Bosasa’s ex-Chief Operating Officer (COO), Angelo Agrizzi, shocked South Africa during his time at the State Capture Inquiry, testifying that former president Jacob Zuma – along with a host of other African National Congress (ANC) politicians – had received exorbitant bribes from Watson in order to secure lucrative tender contracts.

Agrizzi himself received death threats, and was targeted during a robbery at a petrol station earlier this year. Watson essentially became the face of a whole new world of state capture, separate from that of The Guptas. He was also seen on tape counting out bribe money for various entities.
