South Africa, a grand masterpiece of art painted by those who reside in it, is home to various cultures and heritages. In this vast land are the artefacts that shape who we are as Africans and connect us to a lineage that seeks to guide us forward.

Viceroy believes in the importance of knowing one’s roots as that is what helps shape the characters of future generations. Therefore, Viceroy continues to drive Vul’umlomo: Conversations on Culture – which enables a dialogue that reinforces the importance of our history while also showing how dynamic our culture is.

Vul’umlomo: Conversations on Culture is a platform where discussions about culture, traditions and our history as a people are unpacked and explored. For visual story-teller and traditionalist, Mandisi Maboee, culture is explored through art. He expresses his Xhosa heritage through the artistic compositions he creates.

Conversations on Culture Through Art

Culture is the result of communities gathering, sharing similar values and celebrating the characters that it has built. Through culture is how we, as South Africans, find our sense of belonging in a world that is ever-changing. Mandisi Maboee was commissioned by Viceroy to showcase his culture in a way that resonates with him. This is how he interprets the cultural artefacts of his Xhosa heritage:

The tradition of celebration is represented by Viceroy Smooth Gold as it highlights the importance of celebrating life with loved ones even when there is no specific occasion.

The Viceroy 5-Year Old symbolises the coming together of all the parts that make up a traditional ceremony, as the ceremony would not start without Viceroy.

Lastly, Mandisi regards the Viceroy 10-Year Old as the bottle of aspiration because it reminds him of a younger version of himself who aspires to be a man of substance, like his great-grandfather and father.

As we evolve with the times so do the ways we express our culture. May we not forget who we are and where we come from because what is culture if not the daily living of us as a people?
