NEW YORK, NY – SEPTEMBER 07: Actress Lupita Nyong’o and TV host Trevor Noah attend the Calvin Klein Collection fashion show during New York Fashion Week on September 7, 2017 in New York City. Both appeared in the Black Panther movie.

Trevor Noah will see his 2016 autobiography Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood get a movie adaptation in the near future, as reported by Deadline.

In the book, Trevor discusses life growing up in apartheid and post-apartheid South Africa with a white father and black mother. It’s as hilarious as it is deeply poignant, and embodies that engaging brand of satire Noah has become famous for.

Lupita Nyong’o signs up for Born a Crime movie

Already, the upcoming adaptation seems to have a dash of Hollywood magic to it. Lupita Nyong’o, star of 12 Years a Slave, Black Panther, and the latest Star Wars franchise, has signed up to play Trevor’s mom. Okay, now we know this is going to be awesome.

Patricia, who was responsible for Trevor’s upbringing once his biological father left, has had a life of intense struggle and trauma. This culminated in 2009 when her abusive partner Abel Shingange shot her in the head after a church service.

Shingange tracked her down and shot her in the face and back, shattering her jaw, piercing her skull, nose and ear, and leaving her unable to speak properly. Miraculously, she somehow survived and has since remarried to Sfiso Khoza.

Trevor Noah and his award-winning autobiography

Born a Crime has won a multitude of awards. Where do we even start? Not only did it become a New York Times Bestseller, but it’s also picked up the James Thurber Prize for American Humor and two NAACP Image Awards.

It was so well received, Trevor Noah has agreed to publish a second memoir to follow Born a Crime, which is due for release in November 2018. Perhaps this film has a sequel even before it goes into production…

A movie adaptation really would be the crowning glory for our Trev, whose rise to superstardom has been nothing short of a fairy tale. He’s come a long way from illegally selling CDs in Soweto, hasn’t he?
