TikTok just reached two billion downloads

Social video app TikTok from ByteDance has been downloaded more than two billion times globally on the App Store and Google Play.

The analytics platform Sensor Tower recently confirmed that the social media platform TikTok has been downloaded more than 2 billion times globally.

TikTok, the popular video-sharing app known for its quirky 15-second videos, was reportedly downloaded 315 million times in the App Store and Google Play as of 2 May 2020.

The latest milestone comes just five months after TikTok surpassed 1.5 billion downloads.

According to CNET, these app download figures don’t account for third-party app stores that are popular in China. Sensor Tower says India, China, and the US are the countries that account for the most downloads. 

It’s also said that Sensor Tower attributed much of the latest surge in popularity to various national lockdowns, which has pushed more consumers to their mobile devices looking to connect with others during quarantines and social distancing efforts

TikTok continue to rise

While TikTok was on the ascent before 2020, the app has hit new levels of popularity so far this year. It is said that the continuous rise of TikTok gives it an ever-bigger foundation to not only enjoy success for the short-term but build for the long-term to keep competitors at bay.

TikTok recently joined forces with UNICEF South Africa to promote creative learning during the lockdown. The focus is “to promote learning from home during the lockdown period”. The team is now inviting learners, parents and teachers to share their home-learning setup and experiences with the platform’s global community.

Muriel Mafico, Deputy Representative of UNICEF South Africa, explains that UNICEF SA is “delighted to partner with TikTok”, and adds:

“Through this collaboration, learners are able to share ideas and best practices with each other to continue studying. TikTok offers a home for creative expression where users can build their skills and capacities as well as engage with the world around them.”

Furthermore, Mafico explains that UNICEF is all about “providing children and young people with a voice to be heard throughout society”.
