A website that uses an advanced Artificial Intelligence algorithm to generate seemingly real images of human faces has social media users questioning reality.

The website This Person Does Not Exist is a simple webpage that throws up a new image each time the page is refreshed. Even cynical internet users have commented how incredibly real the faces appear.

Some users have even said that they feel like they have seen the non-existent people before.

This person does not exist
Freaky right. Every time this page is refreshed a new image will appear.

Uber software engineer Phillip Wang created the website using a
generative adversarial network (GAN) algorithm developed by graphics card manufacturer Nvidia. The technology uses a large database of real faces to create brand new realistic images.

The software used to create the website is available on software sharing platform Github.

“Recently a talented group of researchers at NVIDIA released the current state of the art generative adversarial network, StyleGAN…I have decided to dig into my own pockets and raise some public awareness for this technology. Faces are most salient to our cognition, so I’ve decided to put that specific pre-trained model up. Their research group has also included pre-trained models for cats, cars, and bedrooms in their repository that you can immediately use,” Wang explains.

Wang adds: “Most people do not understand how good AIs will be at synthesizing images in the future.”

Some of the images do bear telltale signs of fakery but to be honest most look like they are real people. We wouldn’t expect the faces to pass expert analysis but they are causing a stir on social media and give us some idea of what AI could be capable of soon.

I for one welcome our robot overlords.
