Even though Game of Thrones came to an end on 19 May, HBO is set to air a special two-hour documentary about the filming of the eighth and final season.

Game of Thrones: The Last Watch was reportedly directed by British filmmaker Jeanie Finlay and ‘delves deep into the mud and blood to reveal the tears and triumphs involved in the challenge of bringing the fantasy world of Westeros to life in the very real studios, fields and car-parks of Northern Ireland’.

“Much more than a ‘making of’ documentary, this is a funny, heartbreaking story, told with wit and intimacy, about the bittersweet pleasures of what it means to create a world – and then have to say goodbye to it.”

Jeanie Finlay’s previous credits include the documentaries Seahorse, Orion: The Man Who Would Be King, Pantomime, The Great Hip Hop Hoax, Sound It Out, and Goth Cruise. This will be her eighth feature.

HBO announces its first Game of Thrones prequel:

HBO has ordered a pilot episode for the prequel, which will be set thousands of years before the battles over the Iron Throne. The as yet untitled prequel was created by British screenwriter Jane Goldman with author George R.R. Martin.

However, it is not clear when the show will be ready for broadcast. HBO said in a statement that if picked up, the prequel will chronicle “the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.”

“From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”
