The Pietermaritzburg Agency for Community Social Action (Pacsa) has released its food barometer for January 2017. It tracks the average cost of a number of food items.

It noted that in January 2017, the prices of all the foods in the “big food” category increased (25kg maize meal, 10kg rice, 10kg cake flour, 10kg white sugar and 4 L cooking oil).

The total cost of this basket came to just over R630 and items in this basket are identified as the goods low income households identify as foods that “must be secured every month for basic energy and enable meals to be cooked”, according to the report.

It also notes that in January 2017 the cost of the PACSA Minimum Nutritional Food Basket for a family of four is R2 616.71.
