Teachers in South Africa have some of the hardest jobs to contend with within the workplace.

From dealing with students who get physical in the classroom to making do with limited resources to even earning salaries below their qualifications.

But recently educators have been making headlines for their choice of clothing instead.

MEET THE WOMEN WHO MAKE TEACHING LOOK GLAMOROUS

Popular Twitter personality “Man’s NOT Barry Roux” posted a gallery of pictures of female teachers from around the country.

In addition to teaching, the women all flaunt their love of form-fitting clothes that cover their hourglass figures.

Included in the group was teacher Lulu Menziwa, who was recently named as Mzansi’s richest teacher.

The Kwa-Zulu Natal mathematics educator – who posts her love of fashion on her Instagram account – has several “side hustles”, which include her own clothing and skincare line.

SHOULD TEACHERS BE ABLE TO WEAR WHAT THEY WANT?

According to @AdvoBarryRoux, South Africa needs to develop a “dress code” for teachers.

The account tweeted: “Lately female teachers are wearing revealing clothes that are not appropriate for to be worn at school in front of learners and teachers”.

But the personality’s tweet received a mixed response from followers who debated the proposal.

Many felt that no one should women should not be “policed” into wearing certain clothes or vice versa.

@Ntsakol: “Can we please stop telling women how to dress, if they want to walk around naked, just let them be. It is about them and not about living in ‘shared spaces’”

@ShadowRau: “I don’t get how we must be held responsible for people’s minds being in the gutter”

@Ofhie5740555: “Let women wear what they want and feel comfortable in”

Others claimed that as professionals, teachers should dress “appropriately”.

@LebogangMislee: “I think SA teachers should start wearing school uniforms just like theirs students because some teacher’s dress codes are distractions to learners

@star_girl_Lolly: “As teachers, we need to respect our profession and dress appropriately during work hours. I’m sorry but this is inappropriate. Normalise having a work wardrobe and leisure wardrobe”

@Nyamutei_: “A teacher’s dressing should not affect adolescent learners and cause them to have erections and fantasize during the lesson”

WHAT SADTU SAYS ABOUT TEACHERS AND THEIR APPEARANCES IN CLASSROOMS

According to the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU), teachers should not be told how to dress, however, they should adhere to a “dress code preference”.

In 2017, SADTU issued a statement condemning former education MEC Mandla Makupula for his “unwarranted attacks” on teachers who wear “jeans and leggings”.

It said in a statement: “We support any call that our members must at all times dress appropriately. Our members are adults who fully appreciate this fact and do not need to be reminded as to how to dress.

“The teaching profession does not have a uniform which educators must wear neither does the profession need such a uniform. Educators like any member of society have their own dress code preferences and have every right to dress in any appropriate manner which gives them comfort.

“These MECs and those who hold similar views seem to be stuck in backward, patriarchal and stereotypical thinking which fails to adjust to changes in society”.
