The first locally produced offering by streaming service Showmax picked up five awards at South Africa’s premier film, and television awards show.

Showmax has become the first streaming service to win a SAFTA after Tali’s Wedding Diary picked up five awards at this year’s show. The show won awards for Best Comedy, Best Actress (Julia Anastasopoulos as Tali Shapiro), Best Directing (Ari Kruger), Best Cinematography (James Adey) and Best Editing (Richard Starkey).

Head of content for MultiChoice Connected Video, Candice Fangueiro, said the success that followed the production still feels like a dream:

“When we were making Tali’s Wedding Diary, we joked about winning a SAFTA – it seemed totally crazy given it was our first fully-fledged Showmax Original and all of us were learning as we went. Fast-forward and we’re on stage not just winning one SAFTA award but taking home five. I’m still pinching myself.”

The mockumentary is about Tali – a stereotypical Joburg princess who moved to Cape Town and needs to navigate through the trials and tribulations of planning a wedding while dealing with her good-hearted fiance Darren and his try-hard sidekick, Rael. How did that guy not get a nomination for best supporting actor, by the way?

The actors went all out to take viewers on the journey. Candace explains that “Julia and Ari have been amazing partners in bringing to life a character who South Africa has come to love.” She adds:

“Tali’s become bigger than we ever could have expected and this gives us the confidence and appetite to get out there and tell more stories. I’m really grateful to everyone involved – what an incredible outcome.”

After all of the excitement this week, Tali still managed to take some time out of her busy schedule to tell her many Instagram followers how much she appreciated all the success.

In the lead up to the SAFTAs, Tali’s Wedding Diary passed a significant milestone as it reached 1m views on the streaming platform.
